May 2005: Nu Fruits of the Amazon launched the aa berry for sale direct to the Australian public online at www.nufruits.com from April 2005. Haven’t heard of aa yet? You soon will!

Pronounced ‘ah-sigh-ee’, this dark berry has been a staple part of the Amazonian diet for centuries, and now after revolutionising the juice market in the United States aa is set to be the next big little thing in Australia.

Aa recently featured on Oprah in Australia when anti-ageing expert Dr Nicholas Perricone named the berry as the Number One Superfood to help you look younger and live longer. Since the broadcast, Nu Fruits of the Amazon has literally been inundated with calls from enthusiastic readers of Dr Perricone’s new book The Perricone Promise, all desperate for a direct source of aa in Australia.

Nu Fruits of The Amazon’s Australian director, Barry Vaughan, has been overwhelmed but delighted by the public’s response to the berry. “We’ve been supplying aa to a select group of suppliers including juice bars and health food chains but now the public is demanding aa direct to their homes!,” said Barry. “We’ve put together an excellent system and we’re now ready to ship aa in pulp form from the Amazon straight to your home be it in Sydney, Singleton or Subiaco!”

Why is aa so amazing you might ask? Well aside from the taste which contains overtones of chocolate and cherry, aa is a rich source of antioxidants, iron, calcium and vitamin E. Prices start at AUSD$1.50 per 100 grams (plus postage and handling) and can be delivered anywhere in Australia.

It’s easy to get your own personal source of this wonder berry! Just log on to www.nufruits.com click on the ‘Get Nu’ icon or email Barry Vaughan direct barry@nufruits.com.

Recipe ideas are also available at www.nufruits.com so log on and find out about ‘it’ berry, aa.

Hong Kong Street Food

If you have visited Hong Kong in the past, you should have tried the typical HK street food stalls and had a taste of the famous curry fish balls there. If you haven’t, then you must make sure you will try it the next time you are there.

What is so special about it? Standing in front of a food stall like this, you will be able to see a wide selection of food choices. My favourite would be the curry fish balls and the pig intestines. Of course these may not sound mouth-watering to some of you but I am sure you will be able to find something which you fancy eating. Octopus balls, beef balls, minced pork balls, octopus, squids, chilli wrapped with fish meat, chicken wings or tips, fish balls and lettuce in soup, fake shark fin soup, cow tripe and many others are all available.

Just go to Mong Kok, you can easily find one at each street corner. Then of course, these types of stalls are everywhere in HK.

Most of these stalls do not provide seating but some do. With those few which provide seating, very often you will also find noodles available. When I was small, I used to enjoy a bowl of these noodles for lunch. At that time, it did not cost me more than HK$1 per bowl. These days, you will not be able to enjoy one bowl of such noodles for at least HK$15.

You can combine as many ingredients as possible in one of these bowls of noodles. The only difference is that the more ingredients the more expensive your bowl of noodles will be. There are already at least four types of noodles which you can choose from - greasy noodles, flat noodles, thin noodles or rice noodles. If you want you can have some vegetables. Apart from some Chinese noodles, you can also have the western choice of lettuce. Then there are the meat options. The most popular would be pig’s intestines, pig’s blood and pig’s skin. However, if these sound revolting to you, then you can choose some more common ones such as fish balls, chicken wings, meat balls, pork belly meat, fish dumplings, pork dumplings etc.

There is one thing to remember. One may not find these places very hygienic. I am not saying that you should refrain from trying any of these places since it is one of the specialties in HK. The food on offer is generally very well cooked, so you should not have any problems. What you need to do is just to be careful. If you are already having difficulty acclimatizing to the new environment, then I would advise you to leave these eating places until another time.

Gather your courage and I am sure the food from such stalls will not disappoint you!

The chances of scooping up the euro millions jackpot is a far-off 1 in seventy six million but the odds of winning a money prize is a fairly decent 1 in 24. If the jack-pot is not won in a given lotto draw, it is brought forward to the next week that will result in an ever increasing jack-pot prize. New regulations added on the 9/02/07 limit the amount of successive rollovers to 11, with the jackpot rolling out to lower prize levels succeeding the eleventh lotto draw if the prize is not collected.

The Euro millions lotto or the Euro lotto, as it is ordinarily renowned, gathers the ticket receipts of the 9 partaking European countries showing a mammoth Euro lottery jackpot. With the number of nations joining the Euro on the increase, that will without question will lead to even more states partaking in the Euro Millions lotto. A growth in the number of individuals partaking in the European Lotto will lead to a lasting increase of the already enormous EuroMillions jackpots.

The new regulations likewise initiated EuroMillions Super Draw which go on twice yearly plus they offer jackpots in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super Draws is that the jackpot must be won during the week of the lottery draw; this means, when there is no ticket matching, all the drawn numbers then the top prize will then be distributed to the lotto ticket holder(s) in the succeeding winning prize level.

Each and every participant has to pick out five primary numbers from 1 to 50 and two Lucky Star numbers from one to nine. During the lottery draw, 5 primary and 2 lucky star numbers are then picked out at random from two lotto draw machines containing numbered lotto balls.

(NC)As the holiday season arrives, our menus are sure to include tasty treats and yummy desserts, including traditional and new, anything-but-humble pie flavours. Pies are a favourite way to end a meal and they’ve been part of our culture for a long time.

Did you know… the early Romans probably made the first pies, a humble pastry stuffed primarily with meat or other savoury fillings? The first recipe published by the Romans was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie. The word “pie” dates back to Middle English of the 14th century when it was also spelled “pye”. During Tudor and Stuart times in England, pies were often made with pears and quince, as well as apples. English tradition credits Queen Elizabeth I with making the first cherry pie, but whether her majesty spent time in the kitchen is arguable. The first mention of a fruit pie in print appeared in 1590 in prose writer Robert Greene’s Arcadia: “Thy breath is like the steame of apple-pyes.”

Quick Home-Baked Pies

There is no doubt that the delectable aroma of a baking pie still works its magic on us. But in our increasingly time-starved lives, it is hard to get around to baking. “Some young women (and men), trained to use the microwave, have never had the opportunity to bake a pie from scratch,” says Chris Glowienka, spokesperson for Sara Lee.

“Our newest addition, called Oven Fresh, is a throwback to a time when life had a more relaxed pace and there was time to slow down, spend a couple of hours in the kitchen and bake a fresh fruit pie for your family and friends. Now we do half of the work and you just pop our pies into the oven. And because you don’t merely heat them through, these thoroughly modern pies let you experience real baking.”

The Oven Fresh pies, he says, include trusted and time-honoured flavours like Apple, Pumpkin, and Dutch Apple with its crunchy streusel topping. For something a little more special, Signature Selections by Sara Lee brings you Fruits of the Forest Deep Dish (made with blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples and rhubarb), Caramel Applenut Deep Dish and classic Southern Pecan.

“Many of our pies are free of preservatives,” says Mr. Glowienka. “We use fruit that is flash frozen right after it’s picked at peak ripeness and never pre-cooked. The fruit simmers in its own juice while the pie is in your oven. Sara Lee pies also have the light, flaky crust homemakers today have come to expect.”

Even if you are pressed for time this holiday season, “bake” your own pie and watch smiles light up your guests’ faces.

And why not take along one of these pies as a welcome additional to any holiday buffet or as a thoughtful hostess gift? It is sure to be appreciated.

Often, the coffee connoisseur is asked, “What is the best coffee in the world?” Almost unequivocally the answer is… “The one I roast in my kitchen.” However, when pressed to name a commercially available bean the answer is more often than not, a Hawaiian coffee.

This is quite a remarkable achievement considering that the coffee plant was not introduced to Hawaii until 1825, almost a thousand years after commercial cultivation began in other, older, growing regions of the world. Hawaiian coffee growers have benefited from many centuries of trial and error without ever having pruned a branch, you could say that the coffee gods saved the best for last.

Humans first set foot on Hawaiian soil around 600 A.D. The same time that a goat herder in Ethiopia was observing his goats odd, excited behavior after eating a strange cherry-like berry from a curious bush. Intrigued by their enthusiasm, the shepherd picked a basketful for himself but upon tasting the bitter fruit the shepherd tossed the entire basket into the fire in disgust.

As the fire burned away the husks of the berry and the seed, or bean, began to roast and crackle a very enticing aroma was released and the peasant herder had another idea, to infuse the roasted beans with boiling water. What was born was the world’s most popular beverage for a millennium to come.

Imagine taking a highly refined strain of the prized coffee Arabica and transplanting it in a place that had absolutely perfect conditions that were as of yet unknown to the world. The result would be an even more evolved, more refined strain of what was already the best in the world. Hawaiian coffee soon became known for its superb, rich, high-toned acidity; fruit nuance; medium to full body and complex aroma.

The Kona coast on the Big Island of Hawaii has been described as the Napa Valley of the coffee world. Kona grown Hawaiian coffee more resembles the finest Latin American coffees than that of other Pacific region coffees. Much like the Napa Valley surprised the wine world when it started producing world-class wines; Hawaii continues to surpass the expectations of connoisseurs around the world with clean, crisp, perfectly balanced coffees.

While coffee might not be the beverage of choice while relaxing on a beach in paradise, a cup of Hawaiian coffee and a little imagination might just help ease the tension of a hectic day and transport you, at least temporarily, to a place where life is much slower and your biggest problem is deciding what color of tiny-umbrella to put in your other favorite beverage.

A pot of hot oil that you dip meat into sounds downright barbaric but it can also be heart healthy. Broth and hot oil fondues are much less decadent than their siblings, cheese and chocolate fondue but they’re just as tasty. If a little care is taken when selecting ingredients and overeating is avoided, then both broth and hot oil fondues can become a healthy meal.

Fondue Bourguignonne (also known as hot oil fondue) consists of diners who cook their own food on long forks in a pot filled with hot oil. The oil is heated in a fondue pot to about 325 degrees and guests spike cubes of meat and place them directly into the hot oil. While waiting a minute or two for the meat to cook and also to enjoy some wine and their company (the best part of fondue) the cube is removed from the oil and ready to be dunked into a variety of dipping sauces.

In order to make hot oil fondue healthier you need to start with the oil. Peanut oil is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in monounsaturated fat. This means that that just like olive oil, peanut oil will improve the ratio of “good cholesterol” to “bad cholesterol”.

Next you will need to use lean cuts of meat. Beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin and loin of lamb are good but chicken or turkey breast are your best bets. And keep the portions small. The general guideline is that the portion should be about the size of your palm of your hand.

Dipping sauces can also be made healthier with ingredient substitutions. Try using low sodium soy sauce or fat free sour cream. Take a small dip and don’t drown your food in the sauce. Just say no to the béarnaise or hollandaise sauce.

Broth fondues are similar to hot oil fondue except they are cooked in broth instead of oil. The benefit of cooking in broth is that it takes on the flavors of the ingredients dunked in it and you can eat it. Often broth fondue (or Shabu Shabu) is followed by a course of noodle or rice soup that is made with the leftover broth.

Start your broth fondue with low sodium chicken or beef broth. Like hot oil fondue you should use lean cuts of meat, small portions and limit the use of dipping sauces. Broth fondues add vegetables to the mix. Try adding mushrooms, green onions, carrots and celery to the broth. Loading up on vegetables will not only fill you but they’re healthy for you.

When running low on ingredients, add the remainder to the fondue pot along with some noodles or rice. Let simmer for a few minutes and serve this wonderfully flavored soup as an after dinner treat to your guests.

Chocolate fondue is delicious but fattening. Cheese fondue is not something you should eat every day. When dieting you should probably skip them both and stick to broth and hot oil fondues. If some care is taken while gathering ingredients, fondue can become a healthy meal.

Tea: It Does the Body Good

Studies that support the health benefits of tea drinking keep filling the headlines. There’s simply no denying that a daily spot of tea does the body good.

Even though researchers can’t quite agree on every aspect, I’m sold on the fact that a few cups a day will do its best to protect me from heart disease, a stroke, cancer, and more.

What Makes Tea Good for the Body?

Tea contains high levels of antioxidants, some of which are called polyphenols, flavonoids, and catechins, and all of which take on the “free radicals” in the body and prevent them from harming the healthy cells on board.

In other words, sending in antioxidants is disease prevention in its finest form. Antioxidants are ready and waiting not only in teas but also in several fruits, vegetables, nuts, meats, and even wines (see my health benefits of wine article).

If that were not enough, tea also contains flouride which benefits your teeth and has bacteria killing properties which helps control bad breath and the formation of plaque.

Are All Teas Equally Good for the Body?

This is a question researchers are still squabbling over. Does green tea have more antioxidants than black tea? Should I drink instant tea or loose leaf tea for better health benefits? Is hot tea better than iced tea? And here’s what it comes down to:

  • Higher quality teas may have more catechin antioxidants than lower quality teas.
  • White tea has more antioxidants than any other tea.
  • Green tea has more catechin antioxidants than black tea since black tea goes through more processing.
  • Unfermented rooibos tea has more polyphenol antioxidants than fermented rooibos.
  • Freshly brewed teas have more polyphenol antioxidants than instant or bottled teas.
  • More researchers seem to agree that brewed (cold or hot) or caffeinated tea has more antioxidants than instant teas.

Here’s a short preview of the hundreds of recent studies that boast the health benefits of tea and its antioxidants:

Heart Benefits:

  • Study finds tea drinkers have lower blood pressure (Archives of Internal Medicine, 2004).
  • Tea may lower cholesterol and protect against heart disease (Journal of Nutrition, 2003).
  • Black tea may lower “bad” cholesterol (United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, 2003).
  • Tea consumption may help heart disease patients (Circulation: The Journal of the American Heart Association, 2001).

Cancer Prevention:

  • Green tea could help stem esophageal cancer. (Harvard Medical School, 2004).
  • Green and black tea can slow down the spread of prostate cancer (Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, 2004).
  • Tea may protect against cancer caused by smoking. (Journal of Nutrition, 2003).
  • Green tea and white tea fight colon cancer (Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University study, Carcinogenesis, 2003).
  • Hot tea may lower risk of some skin cancers (University of Arizona study, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention (Vol. 9, No. 7), 2001).
  • Green tea consumption may lower stomach cancer risk (University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Public Health study, International Journal of Cancer (Vol. 92: 600-604), 2001).

Hypertension-Reducing Benefits:

  • Green and oolong teas reduce risk of hypertension (National Cheng Kung University study, Archives of Internal Medicine, 2004).

Immunity-Boosting Benefits

  • Tea believed to boost the body’s defenses (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2003)

Leukemia-Fighting Benefits:

  • A green tea component helps kill leukemia cells (Mayo Clinic, 2004).

Alzheimer’s-Fighting Benefits:

  • Drinking tea might delay Alzheimer’s Disease (Newcastle University’s Medicinal Plant Research Centre study, Phytotherapy Research, 2004).

AIDS-Fighting Benefits:

  • Tea may play a role as an AIDS fighter (University of Tokyo, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2003).

In Conclusion:

So how do you get started in doing your body some good with tea?

To get the most health benefits out of your teas, choose high-quality loose leaf teas from your local or online tea shop. Brew it up and enjoy. And of course, don’t throw out the idea of enjoying instant or bottled teas when you’re on the go. You just might have to drink a little more.

Don’t wait any longer. Sip, savor, and fight disease today. It’s never too late to enjoy the many health benefits of tea!

Sports shoes is in all likelihood the most required piece of equipment you will purchase so it’s crucial that you pick and choose the suitable pair.

A large number of people do not recognise that there are various differences in the way sports trainers help your feet. It is not great for your feet if you play football or tennis in the identical footwear you wear for running.

“Unfortunately, sixty-five percent of the United Kingdom’s recreational men & women put on the wrong shoes for their chosen leisure activity,” he says. “Shoes are the most indispensable piece of exercise kit you will ever buy and altering what you wear on your feet can stop damage.”

Football can put loads of stress on the feet, particularly when playing on firm surfaces like that of AstroTurf. The football shoes can also put force on your feet, & it is not abnormal for a footballer to suffer from corns, calluses or damaged, thickened and ingrown toenails. A excellent, well-fitted pair of football boots is imperative & there should not be any signs of pressure on the foot after a match or training session.

Racquet sports: It’s vital when playing racquet sports, like that of tennis or squash, to choose trainers exclusively designed for the purpose. These sports involve a lot of right-to-left movement & jogging shoes won’t provide the needed solidity. Racquet sport shoes are heavier & more firm than running footwear, because their toes are designed for stop-and-go action. Comfort should be your chief priority and it is essential to change your sports footwear frequently. Find superb deals on cycling jerseys online today.

Walking is an admirable way to begin a calm exercise schedule, whilst the more experienced go for hiking. It is excellent for your cardiovascular health but is lower impact & so comes with reduced risk of damage.
